What Is Going On With Trump’s Impeachment Now?

What’s Going On With Trump’s Impeachment Now?

Trump’s impeachment is on course. Justice for Christmas 2019? Here’s what’s going on now that the investigative hearings are done and the Articles Of Impeachment are drafted and ready. The next phase of impeaching Trump is happening quickly.

2-minute recap of 24+ hours of Trump’s impeachment hearings

First, let’s recap the events of the public investigative hearings.

Need to Impeach Logo

mpeachment continued to build momentum in Washington, D.C. this week thanks to impeachment supporters who made calls, sent emails, and took to the streets last month. In October, impeachment supporters attended and asked questions about impeachment at more than 137 town halls. In November, Congress has taken notice. We’ve now heard from multiple key witnesses who are confirming some of the most damning facts about Trump’s use of military aid to pressure Ukraine to interfere in our elections.

If you didn’t catch all 24+ hours of this week’s public impeachment hearings or need a 2-minute summary, here are the key takeaways:

Tuesday, November 19th:

  • Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman testified that he was so disturbed by Trump’s July 25th call that he immediately brought his concerns to the NSC lawyers, and he confirmed that Amb. Sondland raised politically motivated investigations to the Ukrainian delegation in a meeting John Bolton was forced to cut short. He also confirmed that no one supported Trump’s inexplicable decision to freeze military aid to Ukraine.
  • Jennifer Williams pointed out an omission in the “transcript” of the July 25th phone call that the White House released. It failed to include mentions of Burisma, which is evidence of a coverup on the part of the Administration.
  • Kurt Volker made it clear that there was and remains no evidence that Joe Biden acted improperly in Ukraine. The former Vice President did not try to shut down an investigation into his son’s company and Volker says that Trump’s attempts to launch an investigation into Burisma were baseless.
  • Tim Morrison testified that he understood clearly, from conversations with Ambassador Sondland, that Zelensky had to announce an investigation into Trump’s political rival in order to receive the congressionally approved foreign aid.

Wednesday, November 20th:

  • Ambassador Gordon Sondland declared, in no uncertain terms, that there was a quid pro quo between this administration and Ukraine. He also makes it clear that this was not just a case of a few bad actors. Those at the highest level, including Secretary Pompeo and Trump, knew about this corrupt deal.
  • Laura Cooper confirmed the timeline. In direct contradiction of a Republican talking point, Cooper testified that Ukranian officials knew about the hold on security assistance just hours after the July 25th phone call.
  • David Hale, one of the Republicans’ own witnesses, testified that withholding aid to a desperate ally is “unusual,” “completely inappropriate,” and just plain “wrong.”

Thursday, November 21st:

  • Dr. Fiona Hill testified that the Ukraine pressure campaign was a “domestic political errand” that had nothing to do with corruption in Ukraine. She also pointed out that furthering conspiracies about the 2016 election to distract from Trump’s bad actions only helps Putin.
  • David Holmes testified that “the security assistance hold was likely intended by the president either as an expression of dissatisfaction with the Ukrainians who had not yet agreed to the Burisma/Biden investigation or as an effort to increase the pressure on them to do so.”

So what did we learn this week? Witnesses confirmed that President Trump:

  • Pushed Ukraine to interfere in our 2020 elections.
  • Used US military aid and a visit to the White House to bribe and extort a foreign government into digging up dirt on his personal political opponent.
  • Tried to cover it up.

If the average person did this, they’d go to jail.

Damn fools!

Dear MoveOn member,

As the impeachment hearings against Donald Trump go on, Republican members of Congress are shredding reality to protect him in the face of mounting evidence that he and his administration are a criminal syndicate.

Here’s the truth: Congressional Republicans know that Trump is guilty, and they know that they look like damn fools for protecting him. Every day, they are making a calculation of how far they can take this without losing their careers, which is why it is so important for MoveOn to ramp up its campaign to break the Republican dam by making an association with Trump’s crimes politically toxic, leaving no choice but to get rid of Trump once and for all.

James, will you join me and chip in $3 a week to help MoveOn’s all-hands-on-deck campaign to impeach, convict, and remove Donald Trump from office? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after Trump is no longer president to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Yes, I’ll chip in weekly to help keep MoveOn’s impeachment campaign going for as long as it takes.

No, I’m sorry, I can’t chip in weekly.

I am so grateful that MoveOn members have been in this fight from the beginning, but now that we are in what could be the final sprint, we need to pull out all the stops. The team at MoveOn has shown me their plans, and I believe that if they can execute all of what they want to do, it could make all the difference. With your help, MoveOn will:

  • Run TV ads advocating for impeachment in critical districts during the upcoming congressional recess. While Republicans, including Trump’s “new Republican star” Elise Stefanik, are in their home districts next week, MoveOn will buy ad space to run commercials demanding that they stop carrying water for Trump and instead stand up for their constituents. When the ad was released on social media on Friday, it got tens of thousands of views in an hour, and we know it will get even more play on television in the district.
  • Build a massive rapid-response network to host events the night before the impeachment vote. These hundreds of nationwide protests will take place in front of congressional offices in hundreds of districts around the country just before the House votes on impeachment, and MoveOn needs to make sure that tens of thousands of people show up across the country to make their support visible.
  • Work on the ground in key states to flip Republican senators to vote to convict. MoveOn has hired organizers in four states, and they’re already working tirelessly day in and day out to generate local media coverage, rally communities, host weekly events, and build pressure on the Republican senators who are most likely to vote to convict Trump.
  • Keep camera crews at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., to confront members of Congress. MoveOn activists have been asking a very simple question of Republicans: Is it OK for a president to solicit help from a foreign government to win an election? Republicans are literally running and hiding to avoid answering this question, so MoveOn is capturing evidence of their cowardice, featuring it in digital videos, and sharing the videos far and wide.

The team at MoveOn has told me how much it will cost to run all of these programs at once, plus keep the phones ringing off the hook on Capitol Hill. The bottom line is that right now MoveOn does not have the budget to keep everything going at the intensity I know this fight to get Trump impeached requires, and that is why MoveOn needs your help.

James, will you chip in $5 a week, so that MoveOn can keep every single one of the programs critical to impeaching Donald Trump up and running? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after Donald Trump is no longer president to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Thanks for all you can do.

Republicans will do literally anything to defend Trump from Impeachment

Fellow Progressive —

The GOP is going all in to shield their president from the consequences of breaking the law. And if we don’t respond now, they’re going to succeed.

According to the New York Times, Trump has spent roughly 8 million dollars on digital and TV ads. On top of that, the Republican National Committee (RNC) says they’ve spent another $2.3 million. And here’s the kicker: Just yesterday, Politico broke that the American Action Network, a Republican advocacy group, is launching a $7 million anti-impeachment advertising blitz in 37 congressional districts.

Us? Here’s the truth: We want to fight back, but we’re 80% behind our fundraising goal for this month. Right now, we don’t have the money to keep up.

The GOP will do literally anything to protect Trump, but if we can’t keep pace with their spending, they will beat us. Chip in $10 TONIGHT to fund ads, calls and more to impeach Trump and push forward our progressive agenda:

Fellow American,

We want to talk about some surveys we took of the Indivisible movement last week.

Heading into the November Presidential Debate in Atlanta, we wanted to hear how the Indivisible movement was thinking about the 2020 field and which issues were at the top of your minds before any of the candidates stepped onto the debate stage again.

More than six thousand of you, from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, shared your thoughts. And the results are in:

Graph showing responses to the question "If the election were held today, who would you vote for in the Democratic Primary for president?" Elizabeth Warren leads the responses followed by Pete Buttigieg.

  • Senator Warren remains the top choice of Indivisibles. In our ranked choice polling, a plurality of respondents said they would vote for her if the election were held today, with 83 percent of respondents listing her in their top five candidates, compared to 66 percent for Mayor Pete and 53 percent for Senator Harris.
  • Respondents are starting to make up their minds. 45 percent of respondents say they are unlikely to switch candidates between now and the primary, compared to 15 percent who think it’s likely that their preference will change.
  • Indivisibles want bold solutions to fix our democracy — and they’re judging candidates based on their policy positions. When asked which policy issues they were evaluating candidates on, 97 percent of respondents selected democracy reform. Climate change, health care, gun violence prevention and immigration were also all top issues, with over 60 percent of respondents selecting those as well.

Following the debate, we sent texts to a separate focus group of nearly 4,000 Indivisibles and supporters in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, asking which candidate most inspired them during the debate. The results demonstrated the strong Democratic field:

A graph showing the results of the question "who most inspired you at tonight's debate." Buttigieg leads, followed by Warren and Harris.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg (21%)
Senator Elizabeth Warren (17%)
Senator Kamala Harris (13%)

While Buttigieg and Warren lead the pack, six of the ten candidates on the debate stage received over ten percent of the vote. A notable exception? Former Vice President Biden, who only managed to outperform Andrew Yang, Tom Steyer and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

But of course — the debates were far from the only thing going on last week! Keep on reading for some more updates on what’s been going on and what’s coming up.

First, your weekly to-dos:

 Your 5 weekly to-dos for Trump’s Impeachment

  1. Sign up to make some calls connecting voters to senators to demand a complete and fair impeachment trial. We’ve said this already, but we’re halfway to our goal of calling one million constituents of the 13 senators who really need to hear from them (senators who are vulnerable because they’re up for reelection next year and folks who are retiring and worrying a lot about their legacies). We’re asking you to call voters in those states and ask them to turn up the pressure on their elected officials. It’s a simple four-part process:
    • You call a progressive voter in a key state with one of these 13 Republicans. These folks are your friends — they attended the Women’s March and/or fight for progressive causes.
    • You explain how they have power now. You’ll remind them why the continued fight for impeachment is so important — and why they have particular power in this moment.
    • You ask them to use their power. Then, you’ll ask them to call their senator and make their voices heard on why we’re demanding courage in this moment.
    • You push a button and connect them to their senator’s office. The call tool will allow you to automatically patch them through to the senator’s DC office.
  2. Register or find a Trump is Not Above the Law Impeachment Eve event now. The night before the House of Representatives takes an historic vote to impeach Trump, as representatives finalize their positions and senators look on, we’ll head to every congressional office and public square to declare that Nobody Is Above the Law. There are more than 315 events on the map as of now with more being added every day. Take a look to find (or host) one near you.
  3. Tell the House to lower prescription drug prices by improving H.R. 3. Sky-high prescription drug prices are an urgent crisis for millions of Americans, and it’s time for Congress to protect people from Big Pharma’s greed. H.R. 3, which will likely get a vote in the House in mid-December, is a good start, but it can still be expanded to make sure it benefits as many people as possible. Call your Member of Congress and tell them to improve H.R. 3 using our call script above!
  4. Register for the National Activist Call on Dec 5 at 8 PM ET. We’re going to cover the latest updates on the impeachment inquiry in the House, share the latest updates on our presidential engagement process, and recap the work we did in 2019!
  5. Watch (or re-watch) our candidate interviews. Last week and today, Leah and Ezra launched a series of live interviews with the Democratic presidential candidates centered around the Indivisible movement as we continue our work to defeat Trump. If you missed them, head to our YouTube page to catch up! So far, we’ve talked to Senator Booker, Senator Warren, Tom Steyer, Mayor Buttigieg and Secretary Castro, and we have more invitations out.

Support the Movement For Trump’s Impeachment

Last week’s impeachment hearings made it clearer than ever that Republicans will ignore evidence, laws, and precedents to hold onto power. The only tool we have to get them to do the right thing is constituent power: making sure Senators hear loud and clear that it’s time to impeach.

The great thing about our HubDialer program is that it puts activist energy to use where it’s most crucial. That means voters whose senators are already on board can still have an impact by helping other voters in key target states contact those senators.

Our biggest source of funding for impeachment calls — and all our work — is grassroots donations. That means we’re counting on you: please, rush a $10 donation right now so we can keep working on all our crucial programs.

 IndivisiWin of the Week

Indivisible leaders from across the South joined Leah and Ezra as they interviewed presidential candidates about grassroots activism, immigration, and democracy reform.

That’s it from us today, folks. Have a very happy Thanksgiving and we’ll see you next week!
