MoveOn Is Helping To Boost The Impeachment Polls Higher
A Report About How MoveOn Is Helping
To Boost The Impeachment Polls Higher
A new wave of resistance to Donald Trump is rising. From the tally of indictments and guilty pleas to the bombshell whistle-blower reports, it’s clear that impeachment apathy has ended for Democrats AND Republicans. Support the MoveOn phone tree campaign.
Even as the Republican dam is starting to break on impeachment, Trump continues to violate the Constitution on a daily basis. Most recently, he tried to host the G-7 summit (a meeting of the seven biggest economies in the world) at his Doral, Florida resort, which would have benefited him financially—but was forced to reverse course after bipartisan criticism.6 If we do not impeach Trump, all future presidents would presume that they are above the law and that the Constitution doesn’t apply to them. Republicans are starting to realize this terrifying fact, and now’s the time for us to go all-in to end Trump’s lawless presidency.
Back in 2017, Amy White created a powerful activist engagement tool that became MoveOn’s secret weapon in the fight to save Obamacare. It worked! We won by just one vote in the Senate! And now, I think we can bring back this secret weapon to help win the fight to impeach, convict, and remove Donald Trump.
Impeachment Alert (via MoveOn) Impeachment Polls Are Rising
Dear MoveOn member,
In August of 2018, only about 4 in 10 Americans supported impeaching Donald Trump.1
Even after special counsel Robert Mueller delivered his report to Congress, most Americans still didn’t support impeachment.
But now, finally, after the White House whistleblower’s stunning revelations and continued bombshells from inside the White House—including chief of staff Mick Mulvaney’s public admission of Trump’s quid pro quo with Ukraine—public opinion has flipped.2
A majority of Americans now support impeachment AND Trump’s removal, and that changes everything.3
So now MoveOn is announcing a big decision: We’re deploying a team of paid, professional organizers in the states of key Republican senators to mobilize grassroots support for impeachment, conviction, and removal. That means not just hiring staff but also providing the tools, resources, signage, and more for the organizers to do their jobs, so that we can maximize the impact of MoveOn members and allies in those states.
It means a full campaign infrastructure, and we’re counting on your help to make it possible.
Right now, we have the budget to hire organizers in only three states. That’s not enough. We need to hire organizers in additional states, and keep them on the ground for the duration of this fight. Which is why we’re asking:
Can you chip in $5 a month to help us expand our budget, hire talented grassroots organizers in critical states, and keep this crucial program going for the duration of the impeachment inquiry?
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
With public opinion shifting, impeachment could really happen now.
In fact, one Republican senator told a reporter that “if it was a secret vote, 30 Republican senators would vote to impeach Trump.”4 And as soon as one Republican senator makes a public announcement that they will vote to convict him, the dam will break open. And that will be only a matter of time, since prominent Republicans are starting to speak out, including former presidential candidate John Kasich, who just told CNN that Trump’s “across the Rubicon” and should be impeached.5
We’re going big with an in-depth organizing campaign
—and we’ve got a proven model that we know works.
In 2017 and 2018, we went big to train MoveOn members to become community organizers and volunteer leaders, empowering them to host events, knock on doors, and talk to their communities. And it paid off—big time.
At the same time, MoveOn launched the Nobody is Above the Law network with our partners in order to mobilize hundreds of thousands of people within hours of important news breaking during the Mueller investigation. The strategy worked, with MoveOn members and our allies showing up in huge numbers at key moments.
That laid the groundwork for the critical work we are now doing to impeach Trump and remove him from office once and for all. We’ve identified the handful of Republican senators who we might be able to pressure to break from Trump.
The organizers we hire in these states will work with local groups to plan events in front of Senate district offices, follow senators when they are in town to put them on the spot, generate local media coverage (the kind that senators pay close attention to), and make sure these senators know that no matter what the Trump echo chamber says, their constituents want them to vote to remove him from office.
We’re on the verge of ending this disaster of a presidency. And now, we need your help in order to green-light this budget, start hiring, and ensure we can keep these organizers on our payroll for as long as it takes to win. Will you chip in $5 a month and help us finish the job?
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
Thanks for all you do.

MoveOn’s Data-driven Strategy to Win On Impeachment
Dear MoveOn member,
This is Amy White, MoveOn’s Analytics Director. I spend most of my time buried in spreadsheets, analyzing data, and building mathematical models to help win campaigns. But today, I’m writing you to ask for your help.
You see, back in 2017, I created a powerful activist engagement tool that became MoveOn’s secret weapon in the fight to save Obamacare—which we won by just one vote in the Senate! And now, I think we can bring back this secret weapon to help win the fight to impeach, convict, and remove Donald Trump.
Here’s how it works:
First, using some data and a whole lot of math, we identified progressive-leaning voters in key districts of on-the-fence lawmakers.
Next, we made an enormous number of calls to alert those voters about what was happening and encouraged them to get involved! Then, those voters were connected to their lawmakers to make their voices heard.
We are talking about tens of thousands of calls directed at key lawmakers—authentic calls from constituents—at a fraction of the cost of paying an outside vendor to run a call program.
Now that we’re facing a debate over impeachment in Congress, I’m hoping that MoveOn members will help bring my magic phone system back, to once again flood Congress with calls!
Imagine it: You’re sitting on your couch, watching “The Rachel Maddow Show,” infuriated by Trump and wanting Congress to get on with impeachment already, but not quite sure what to do about it. You’re represented by a Democrat, after all, you tell yourself.
But then, your phone rings. And a friendly voice from MoveOn says, “Democrats are nearly united in support of the impeachment inquiry. But a small handful of Democratic senators, including yours, have remained undecided on this issue. Would you like to to be connected now to urge your senator to take a stand against Trump’s abuses of power, efforts to blackmail foreign governments into interfering with U.S elections, and complete obstruction of Congress?”
Of course, you answer “YES!,” then you get patched through, and your voice gets heard, getting us one step closer to impeachment, conviction, and removal.
Who Would You Call For Impeaching Donald Trump?
This same approach can be used to drive a torrent of calls to the offices of key Republicans in Congress—making clear to them that their constituents are fired up and demanding they take action to hold Trump accountable.
Being the analyst that I am, I don’t think that’s the end of it. In fact, it’s just the beginning. I want to grow a movement! So, when you finish your call, I’ll make a note of the fact that you called, to help refine my future models, and so that we can call you back again with more critical actions.
Now, you may be saying: This is all great, Amy! And I hope your plan works, that members of Congress are flooded with calls on impeachment, and that the impeachment inquiry starts moving faster. But how can I help right now?
Here’s how: make a contribution to help out.
Each call generated by this automated calling program costs MoveOn about $2 in direct expenses. So even a small donation will go a long way. Can you chip in $3?
Yes, I’ll chip in to help flood Congress with calls on impeachment.
While this is our most efficient way to generate lots of calls for a reasonable price per call to key targets, there is no way around the fact that it costs money. Pulling it off requires dedicated analyst time, costs to our robocall vendor for every single call we make—which add up quickly—and legal costs, too, because the rules in every state are different. And while there are cheaper ways to make some number of calls, we simply can’t connect anywhere close to this volume of calls any other way.
We’ve set a goal of making 60,000 more calls on impeachment by the end of the year, and to pull that off at $2 a call, we need to raise $120,000. This is totally doable! But we can’t do it without you. Even just $2 will help connect a call where it’s needed most, but if you can afford to chip in $20, you’ll connect TEN calls! And if you can afford $200, then you’ll connect 100 calls!! Can you help out?
Will you chip in $2, $20, $200—or whatever you can afford—to help us connect constituents to Congress on impeachment?
Yes, I’ll chip in to help flood Congress with calls.
Thanks, so much, for all you do.
–Amy White
