Take Action To Impeach Trump With MoveON.org

How to Take Action To Impeach Trump With MoveON.org

Dear MoveOn member,

Can you join a local event near you on or around Saturday, June 15, to declare: It’s time for Congress to impeach Trump?

Donald Trump and his administration have committed countless abuses of power—trampling the rights of communities across America and trampling the Constitution.

We are seeing more and more prominent political voices speaking up for Congress to begin an impeachment inquiry, and this week we crossed 60 representatives who have called for one.1 And that’s why the time is now to push every member of Congress to act on behalf of constituents, country, and Constitution and begin impeachment now.

On Saturday, June 15, and on the days immediately before and after, across the country, MoveOn, By the People, and over 20 allies will be gathering for local events to demand impeachment. These events will be public, visible, family-friendly gatherings to engage and educate our communities about impeachment and demand Congress stop waiting and take action.

Click now to pledge to take action and to find whether there is already an action near you. (If you don’t see one, you can host your own, and MoveOn staff, partners, and volunteers will support you every step of the way and recruit folks to join you at this important event.)

MoveOn members called for impeachment nearly two years ago—but this is the first time we’re hosting events all across the country centered on that demand. In some ways, this is the right moment, as more members of Congress wake up to the need to act. In some ways, it’s long overdue, when you look at the track record of this administration.

Torturing and traumatizing children at the border. Politicizing pardons to encourage law-breaking. Decisions to enrich himself and his family—at the expense of taxpayers and those in critical need. Incitement to violence with religious discrimination, bigotry, and embrace of white supremacists. Playing games with national security. And that’s even before we mention the Mueller report.

The Trump administration’s recent obstruction around the Mueller report and in defiance of congressional subpoenas—on top of nearly a dozen episodes of obstruction detailed in Mueller’s findings, as well as countless pages detailing contact between Trump’s team and Russian operatives—has led to a surge of members of Congress, Democratic leaders, presidential hopefuls, and even Republicans to call for the House of Representatives to open an impeachment inquiry—a formal process that could unearth the truth behind Trump’s crimes and abuses and lead to his impeachment.

A few weeks ago, MoveOn and nearly a dozen allies delivered over 10 million petition signatures to Representatives Tlaib and Green. And now we’re building on that by taking our advocacy for impeachment offline in communities around the country. Over twenty organizations are participating in the day of action, including Indivisible, CREDO, Need to Impeach, the Center for Popular Democracy, and By the People.

Here’s the vicious cycle we’re in: Members of Congress feel they don’t have constituent support to call for impeachment. As a result, congressional leadership is tamping down impeachment talk and pushing for further investigations, but the Trump administration is stonewalling straightforward requests (such as for the full Mueller report!), and without further information, members of Congress feel they can’t change their position. But the need and the demand for impeachment are already out there, and the more people learn about Trump’s abuses, the more they’ll come around. We can break the logjam by showing our elected officials that we will stand with them in holding Trump accountable.
So join us on June 15, and on the days immediately before and after, at local actions across the country—some with champions who support impeachment, some demanding more action from Democrats and Republicans alike—as we fight for our communities and our country.

Thanks for all you do.

Open Letter From Dr. Erin King

Dear MoveOn member,

My name is Dr. Erin King. I’m a Missouri resident and an abortion provider at the Hope Clinic for Women, just across the Missouri state line in Illinois.

Two weeks ago, Missouri’s Republican governor signed into law a near-total abortion ban. The following week, the state refused to renew the license of the Planned Parenthood in St. Louis, which is the last remaining abortion clinic in Missouri.

A judge granted a temporary reprieve for Planned Parenthood last Friday, but the fight to keep Missouri from becoming the only state in the country without an abortion clinic is far from over.

Already, more than half of the patients that I see at the Hope Clinic are Missouri residents who have been forced to travel hundreds of miles across state lines just to access care. Even more personally, I’m also a gynecologist seeing patients in Missouri, and I happen to be married to the medical director of the Planned Parenthood in St. Louis.

I know firsthand that for too many seeking help, it is an impossible financial burden. That is why I am writing to you today, James.

The Gateway Women’s Access Fund in Missouri provides financial assistance to people who do not have the money to travel for an appointment or pay for an abortion. They provide critical, lifesaving assistance to people across my state, and with the newly signed law that threatens Missouri’s last remaining clinic, they are now more essential than ever.

And MoveOn is organizing its members in Missouri and every state across the country to stop these attacks and ensure access to safe and legal abortion in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

That’s why I’m asking you to donate to support those seeking safe and legal abortion in Missouri.

Your donation will be split between the Gateway Women’s Access Fund, which provides financial assistance to Missouri residents who cannot afford the full cost of abortion care, and MoveOn, which is working to ensure access to safe and legal abortion in all 50 states. Will you chip in $3?

Every day when my husband and I walk into our respective health clinics, we walk past protesters who try to trick our patients into going to a fake clinic with false promises and outright lies. It is infuriating.

Those protesters have threatened my life. They have threatened the life of my husband. They have shown up at our home. They have put our children at risk.

One in four women will have an abortion in her lifetime. This new wave of abortion bans will not stop abortion. It will just force people who have the resources to travel farther—and those who don’t? They’ll be forced to stay pregnant or be criminalized for self-managed abortions. As a physician, I know exactly how dangerous that can be, and I am absolutely terrified of the deadly consequences facing those in need of abortion care if that becomes our new reality.

Already, expecting people to travel hundreds of miles and wait for days just to receive a safe, minor medical procedure severely limits access for many of the people who need it the most. This is why we need immediate financial help for people in Missouri and to support advocates such as MoveOn to beat back extremist attacks and save Roe v. Wade.

Abortion funds such as the Gateway Women’s Access Fund can be the difference between being able to access safe care or risking your life.

MoveOn is on the front lines of this fight for safe, legal abortion across America. Will you chip in $3, or whatever you can afford, now?

Please, click here to split a donation between the Gateway Women’s Access Fund and MoveOn’s ongoing work to fight for abortion rights in Missouri and across the country.

Thanks for all you do.

Corinne Ball, MoveOn Civic Action

Dear MoveOn member,

The Democratic-led House of Representatives just passed the most expansive legislation ever to protect immigrant youth—the Dream and Promise Act. This hard-fought milestone was won by immigrant youth who have refused to be silenced by the Trump administration. And MoveOn members like you, James, have been there to back up the leaders of this vital movement every step of the way.

As we celebrate this important milestone, it’s important to step back and acknowledge the work that got us here—and to use this momentum to push Congress to stop funding Donald Trump’s brutal deportation force, which is attacking immigrants at the border and across the country.

The Dream and Promise Act lays the groundwork for the welcoming America that we are working toward building, but immigrants are facing attacks every day, and need us to fight back.

Will you sign this petition to demand Congress Defund Hate and ensure that the deportation force Trump uses to terrorize immigrant and refugee communities is held accountable?

In 2017, when Trump ended the successful Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program—which granted legal status to young immigrants who had grown up in the United States to live, work, study, build homes in, and contribute to their communities—he threw 800,000 people and their families into chaos and uncertainty.

But brave activists continued to organize in the streets, in the courts, and in the halls of Congress. Here are some of the ways in which MoveOn members have joined this monumental campaign:

  • More than 250,000 MoveOn members, from all walks of life, signed a petition calling for an immediate passing of a Dream Act, joining allies in a 1-million signature delivery to the White House.
Dream Act Now petition delivery with United We Dream and others
    • MoveOn members joined events around the country, drove tens of thousands of calls to Congress, shared original videos that were seen tens of millions of times, and funded polling to show that a majority of all voters—Democrats, Republicans and independents—support Dreamers.
    • And in 2017, when Trump and Republicans shut down the government over his attacks on Dreamers, we stood with Dreamers to demand Democrats stay strong.MoveOn members taking action for the Dream Act

  • Then, through 2018, we endorsed candidates for Congress who were clear in their support for Dreamers—and in the historic election last November, swept in a new Democratic majority capable of passing this important legislation.
  • This year, MoveOn members raised nearly $70,000 to help DACA recipients pay their expensive DACA renewal application fees—providing direct support to immigrant youth who must pay $495 every two years to renew.
  • And just this week, MoveOn members in key districts called their representatives to defeat a ploy by the Republicans to insert an amendment at the last minute that was designed to split the Democrats and kill the bill. After hearing from us, Reps. Abby Finkenauer (IA-01), Cindy Axne (IA-03), Andy Kim (NJ-03), Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05), Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02), Antonio Delgado (NY-19), Conor Lamb (PA-17), Elaine Luria (VA-02), and Abigail Spanberger (VA-07) voted the right way. And the final bill passed with every Democrat voting to extend protections to Dreamers.

Now, Trump and Republicans in Congress are continuing to push for more funding for out-of-control federal agencies such as U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Border Patrol) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which are responsible for countless human rights abuses, including the deaths of at least six children in their custody in the last six months.

Our work to stand with immigrants and asylum seekers will happen on many fronts in the next two years:

We need to continue to fight for the Dream and Promise Act.

We need to block the Republicans’ racist, xenophobic agenda—and that means continuing to defund the agencies carrying out Trump’s anti-immigrant acts of terror, including the horrific detention and deportation machine of Border Patrol and ICE.

And we need to elect a new president and new senators ready to stand with Dreamers—and who see our nation as a place of respect and dignity for all immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.

But, right now, we need to stop the harmful attacks our government is waging daily at the border and across the country. Will you sign now and demand Congress stop funding these out-of-control agencies and Defund Hate?

Let’s take a moment to celebrate this historic moment, and then ready ourselves for the considerable work ahead.

Thanks for everything you do.
